The 'Petabyte Chain' and how to survive it
2026-11-04 –, Lotus Stage 2

Ethereum's scaling discussion has centred on execution throughput — gas per second, transactions per second, how far today's sustained rate is from the "gigagas" target. This talk is about what happens to the scalability of the storage layer when this happens and how the core protocol and nodes can support this change.

This talk is mainly technical and talks about how we can change the network to make Ethereum's storage infrastructure to make it scale in the face of increased gas throughput.

It is based upon the following blogs in which I use Erigon as an example node to explore what a future node infrastructure may look like when the mainnet if processing at its intended operational scale.

As well as highlighting the main points from my blog discussion I will also discuss work we have done to make this vision real:

  • A self maintaining distribution network for Erigon nodes
  • Reconciliation of Erigon's data model with existing eco-system standards
  • An example history network which decentralzes RPC provision

I am a life long software developer who hase been working on various blockchain projects since 2016, I have been a core member of the Erigon team since 2023.
