AMPO: Minimal trust options
2026-11-03 –, Lightning Stage

Perpetual options have long been attempted within DeFi, but they typically needed a trusted oracle to make them work. In this talk, I will briefly walk through AMPO, a design of perpetual options that does not require an oracle, and explore the broader idea that the future of DeFi belongs to trust-minimized mechanisms.

On-chain mechanisms that rely on external dependencies, such as oracle operators, tend to focus on decentralizing them. AmPO demonstrates another path: to design them away. AmPO removes the need for the mechanism to know the market price through an external dependency by making the option decay in a predictable manner over time and requiring a fixed exchange of assets at exercise time. During my talk, I will explain this mechanism and how it is designed to be trust minimized. As DeFi continues to be adopted and relied on, building mechanisms with fewer trusted external dependencies reduces the attack surface and the ability to censor protocols.

I have worked across the stack at several companies before diving into crypto in 2021 to explore problems at the intersection of privacy, economics, and software. I am currently a Lead Smart Contract Engineer at ScopeLift, which has had clients such as Compound, Optimism, Uniswap, and other major protocols.
