ERC-4804/6860 defines HTTP-style web3:// links that resolve directly to on-chain resources maintained by smart contracts, turning the EVM itself into a censorship-resistant web server. We cover how it works and the fully on-chain applications it already powers.
As Ethereum’s scalability initiatives (data availability, L2s) mature, they pave the way for fully on-chain applications. Yet one piece has been missing: a decentralized protocol for direct access to on-chain resources like NFT images and on-chain websites. This talk introduces ERC-4804/6860, the Web3 URL standard, which defines HTTP-style web3:// links to navigate resources maintained by smart contracts — effectively turning the EVM into an unstoppable, censorship-resistant HTTP server. We cover the access methods (gateways, CLI, browser extensions, native browser support) and showcase fully on-chain applications already built on web3://, including Vitalik’s blog, dynamic NFTs, and an entirely on-chain blogging platform. We close with what a fully decentralized user journey looks like once computation, storage, and resource access all live on-chain.
