Getting to Lean Ethereum
2026-11-04 –, Lotus Stage 2

Lean Ethereum is usually described as a destination: a tech-debt reset, post-quantum cryptography, and a ZK-proven state transition function. Much less has been said about how the network gets there from where it is today, and the path is not a single hard fork. It is two roads that have to meet: incremental changes on mainnet, and a greenfield lean stack currently being hardened in post-quantum devnets. Each has prerequisites the other does not control.

Lean Ethereum is usually presented as a destination but the path is not one hard fork but two roadmaps that have to converge, one of incremental mainnet changes and one of the greenfield lean stack now being hardened in post-quantum devnets.

We work on both sides of that convergence. We build ethrex, an execution client running in production and prototyping post-Glamsterdam EIPs, and ethlambda, a lean consensus client in the interop devnets. We are actively working through the transition roadmap this talk describes.

The talk maps the dependency graph and show results, describe the roadmap ahead, our insights and lessons learnt to move forward.
