Paths to a Private L1
2026-11-03 –, Lightning Stage

The Strawmap lists "private L1 shielded transfers" as a North Star goal. This talk surveys the candidates, which run from wallet software up to consensus changes, and compares them on privacy properties, tradeoffs, timelines, and blockers.

The Strawmap lists "private L1 shielded transfers" as a North Star goal but the best approach is still unclear.

You might have heard of a few: enshrined shielded pool, app-layer pools, private token standards, stealth addresses, wallet standards, zk wormholes, native UTXOs, confidential balances, private execution, lean staking.

But how do these approaches differ in anonymity? Which has plausible deniability? Which are feasible now and which are a decade out? Which are mutually exclusive? What are the open questions? What are the shared blockers?

You’ll leave knowing what you have to read up on next to achieve Ethereum’s privacy North Star.
