Best Open Source Practices from the Linux Foundation
2026-11-06 –, Lotus Stage 1

“Open source” as a concept seems simple, but it is not straightforward to build an openly governed, growing, and well-run open source project. This talk will focus on some open source best practices learned from experience over many years at the Linux Foundation that can help open source projects in the broader Ethereum community set themselves up for sustained adoption and success.

This talk will cover all of the aspects most critical for the success of setting up and running an open source project in the Ethereum community. This will include software licensing, IP handling, how to deal with AI, crypto agility (for PQ), interoperability, and more. In general, I will explain an issue and how it might affect an open source project in the ETH space, and then show how LF projects have dealt with that particular type of issue in the past. The difference between open source governance–how to maintain and run a large, growing, and living open source project–and just open source software will be explained, with emphasis on the fact that projects should aim to achieve open governance and not just be open source.
